What is Google Gemini?

Google Gemini is an AI chatbot from Google. It understands questions and instructions and can respond to them in natural language. Technically, Gemini is a so-called ‘large language model’ that has been trained with a vast amount of text data.

What can I use Gemini for?

  • Answering questions, even on complex topics
  • Writing texts (e.g. emails, posts, stories)
  • Find ideas (e.g. for projects, trips, gifts)
  • Summarise or rephrase texts
  • Help with learning (explain things simply, create exercises)
  • Provide creative inspiration

What do I need for this?

  • A Google account: Since Gemini is a Google service, you need a Google account (e.g. a Gmail address)
  • An internet connection: Because Gemini works in the cloud, a stable internet connection is required.

On Android smartphones, Gemini can often be started directly by pressing and holding the On/Off button.

The interface at a glance

  • Input field: This is where you write your query or instruction.
  • Send button: Once you have finished typing, press the send button to instruct Gemini to start.
  • Response area: Gemini's response appears here as text or, depending on the query, as lists, tables, etc.
  • History/sidebar: The sidebar on the left-hand side of the screen shows the chat history. This allows you to continue older chats.
  • Feedback (thumbs up/down): You can use the symbols below the response to give Gemini feedback on whether you are satisfied with the response.
  • New chat: When you start a new topic, it makes sense to create a new chat for it.

Talking to Gemini

  • Ask Gemini: Use the microphone icon in the input field and speak your request. With voice command input, Gemini starts automatically as soon as the voice input is finished.
  • Gemini responds: The result of the request is displayed in the response area and Gemini reads it aloud at the same time. If you want to stop the audio output, tap the pause icon in the top right corner.

Tips for better prompts

  • Be specific: Instead of ‘Write about dogs,’ it is better to say ‘Write an informative 500-character article about dogs as pets for older people, describing at least three advantages.’
  • Provide context: What is the goal, who is the text for?
  • Specify the format: List, paragraph, table, length, etc.
  • Ask for improvements: ‘Shorter’, ‘more details’, ‘different tone’.
  • Use roles: ‘Pretend you're a travel expert...’
  • Choose language: Gemini can respond in multiple languages.
