Basics: SMS or Messenger?
The key difference lies in the technology used:
- An SMS is transmitted via the telephone connection, so it does not require an internet connection.
- A messenger message – such as WhatsApp – is sent via an internet connection.
This means that WhatsApp messages cannot be sent without an internet connection, but SMS messages can be sent as long as there is mobile phone reception.
Sending messages via messenger
In order to send an instant message to someone, both the sender and the recipient must have the same messaging app (e.g. WhatsApp) installed.
The second requirement is that the sender knows the recipient's telephone number and has it stored on their smartphone. (see image 1)
If the sender sends the message to a group, all group members must have the same messenger as the sender (e.g. WhatsApp).
To send a message to a group, you must be a member of that group. (see image 2)
